FactoryTalk ViewPoint requires a connection to a FactoryTalk Activation server to access FactoryTalk ViewPoint licenses. In most installations, the FactoryTalk Activation Manager manages the connection. The number of assigned licenses determines how many clients can connect to the FactoryTalk ViewPoint server.
A FactoryTalk ViewPoint license is not required to open FactoryTalk ViewPoint Administration, but only one connection can be made at a time.
On startup, a FactoryTalk ViewPoint server requests its number of assigned licenses from the FactoryTalk Activation server. When client web browsers connect to a published web application, the FactoryTalk ViewPoint server loans one or more licenses to the web browser. Each license allows the web browser to view the application in up to three browser windows or tabs. Viewing with other browsers or more than three windows or tabs requires multiple licenses.
Licenses are released immediately upon log off from the web application, and within 30 seconds of disconnecting a web browser from the server.
If the FactoryTalk ViewPoint server is unable to connect to the FactoryTalk Activation server, it enters a seven-day grace period where it is limited to three temporary licenses. Browsers that borrow a temporary license display "A temporary license is in use" at the top of each page. Once the grace period expires, web applications are not displayed.
